CPQD uses blockchain to give more security to Internet of Things applications

use technology blockchain to increase the security of the identification of Internet-connected devices in IoT applications. This is the innovation that has just been developed by the specialists in blockchain CPQD, with the aim of creating a secure digital identity for “things”.

“The spread of applications of Internet das Coisas (IoT) still comes up against the issue of information security, especially with regard to the identification of devices connected to the network", observes Fernando Marino, technical leader in Blockchain of CPQD. “This dynamic, highly distributed network is subject to attacks of many types. This is the case, for example, with impersonation attacks, in which one device impersonates another, and privacy attacks, which allowtem third-party access to sensitive information”, adds Mateus de Souza, specialist in Decentralized Identity.

To solve this challenge, the laboratory team Blockchain from CPQD developed a solution that uses the concept of decentralized digital identity applied to IoT devices. Fernando Marino explains that sensors and other IoT devices have specific communication protocols – including MQTT (Message Queue Telemetry Transport), for example. “We put a communication tunnel over the MQTT protocol, through which the IoT device sends information to the application with encryption validated by blockchain🇧🇷 For this, we use the DIDComm protocol, which provides secure digital communication and identification in decentralized environments”, he says.

In addition, the CPQD team used Hyperledger Aries, the Hyperledger Project's decentralized digital identity component. This component was embedded in IoT devices and also in the open platform dojot, middleware developed by CPQD for Internet of Things applications. “We integrated dojot into the network blockchain, closing this ecosistemend-to-end and increasing the security of communication between IoT devices, middleware and applications”, concludes Marino.
