CPqD R&D and Inovation FTTx Management: a complete solution for optical access network management

:: FTTx Management: a complete solution for optical access network management

A+ A-
The expansion of fiber optical networks to users' homes, or to the closest point near the users - a concept known as Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) or Fiber-to-the-x (FTTx) - poses several challenges for service providers. One of these challenges is creating the highly sophisticated activities and systems involved in supervising and managing this increasingly complex network to guarantee users will receive top-quality services.

To facilitate this job, CPqD has built the FTTx Management solution, a tool for telecommunications and internet service providers that have already deployed - or are in the process of deploying - optical fiber based access networks.

The main advantage of this solution is that it seamlessly integrates resources and modules for the management of the different network layers - from the basic elements to the Operations Support Systems (OSS) and Business Support Systems (BSS).

This is a highly complex management tool with modules providing Inside and Outside Plant Inventory, Optical Network Supervision and network Integrated Management, with event analysis and alarm correlation.

The Plant Inventory system allows the entire network to be inventoried. Based on georeferenced data, this tool makes planning, designing and managing the physical and logical FTTx network resources much easier. The Optical Network Supervision system includes integrity testing of the fibers that make up the FTTx networks, for quick pinpointing and identification of faults. Integrated Management, in its turn, is a powerful management tool for the entire network, handling fault management, setup, service activation, as well as providing decision-making aids. Last but not least, the entire service activation process can be automated.

The FTTx Management solution also includes business support tools for carriers and service providers. An example is the billing system, featuring an auto-provisioning module and a self-care portal, which provides a direct channel between users and the system.
