CPqD Sells Card Pay Phone Technology to the Island Nation; Three Other Brazilian Companies to Provide Equipment

(Campinas, Brazil) -- CPqD, a leading technology services provider to the telecommunications industry in Brazil and the largest research and development center in Latin America, announced today that it has signed a system supply contract with SamoaTel, Samoa?s national and international telecommunications and postal services provider, to set up a pay phone remote supervision software platform and enabling Samoa to have a public telephony service for the first time in its history.

The software system, known as CPqD Remote Supervision, monitors the occurrence of failures, gathers information on revenue, updates configuration parameters and provides data in the form of reports, allowing the operational control of the payphone plant. Though the technology and its implementation represents a technological milestone passed for Samoa, the same technology has been in place for over a decade in Brazil.

The contract between CPqD and SamoaTel includes software installation within the carrier and subsequent maintenance, as well as the training of involved personnel. Additionally, three other Brazilian companies will provide equipment as part of the SamoaTel agreement. Icatel (Ica telecommunications Ltd.) will manufacture the pay phone devices; ITE (Teleinformática) will produce the telephone booths and enclosures; and ICE Special Cards will provide the inductive cards.

?The introduction of Payphones is an important part of SamoaTel?s strategy to meet its social obligation to increase the availability of telephone services,? said Grant McGouch, IT General Manager of SamoaTel.

?As a result of this agreement, the technology developed by CPqD for the public telephony sector will reach a broader user segment internationally,? CPqD President Hélio Graciosa said. ?We welcome the opportunity to provide similar technology elsewhere in the world, including the U.S.?

Graciosa continued, ?In addition, CPqD is pleased to provide other Brazilian companies the opportunity to expand their businesses in the international marketplace. We are helping to open the doors of the world for our manufacturers to prove their capabilities.?

Last November, CPqD USA, the company?s North American arm, also signed an agreement with PrairieWave, a North American telecommunications operating company, to provide systems to automate the billing, customer care, request management, outside plant management, workforce management, and products supply management for PrairieWave?s cable TV, broadband data and telephony services.
