Achievement of CMM LEVEL 2: Software Excellency

CPqD is among the few organizations to conform to the most accredited software quality model in the world

Upon reaching CMM (Capability Maturity Model) level 2 in the areas of development of supporting systems for operations (CPqD Outside Plant) and telecommunications networks, CPqD is one of the few Brazilian organizations to accomplish this maturity level according to the most adopted worldwide software development quality model.
The evaluation was performed by ISD - Brasil (Integrated Systems Diagnostics Brasil) accredited by SEI (Software Engineering Institute) and the only one in the country qualified to perform this evaluation.

Advantages

Reaching this maturity level in software development means, among other advantages, development cycles that are shorter and better controlled through the standardization of steps. Quality is assured during the entire process and not only at the end. In this way, it is possible to meet customers? expectations in relation to technical requirements, terms and cost control.

According to Mario Côrtes, being compliant to the CMM model will soon be a necessary condition for the maintenance and obtainment of new customers. ?We are on the same level as many of the best software organizations in the world?, he says. The organization goal for the next year is to extend this software development reference model to all areas at CPqD.

According to the Technology Vice-President, Claudio Violato, ?this achievement is the result of a long and continuous effort to improve CPqD management processes, which has been performed with great determination, providing more quality in the work routines of several teams, ensuring customers the certainty of the fulfillment of the plans and commitments made?.

BOX1:

?CPqD did not consider CMM level 2 as an end in itself, but only as a means of adding value to its processes. The proof is that we have already started working towards level 3, without any kind of interruption. This is the ?seed? of continuous improvement that we aim to sow in companies, and CPqD has been employing this concept in a consistent manner?.
Carlos Alberto Caram, CEO at ISD-Brasil

BOX2:

But what is CMM?
CMM ? Capability Maturity Model ? is an improvement model for software engineering processes, recognized worldwide, which aims to help companies in a comprehensive and long-lasting manner. It is largely used to evaluate the degree of maturity of an organization, establishing priorities for its evolution.
Because it is a model based in real experiences, the practices it suggests are efficient and effective.
