CPqD technology to boost Eletronorte telecoms network - Brazil
The Brazilian government's telecoms research unit, CPqD, has won a contract to improve the voice capability of the optical ground wire (OPGW) network of state electric power company Eletronorte, TelecomWeb reported.
The OPGW network can simultaneously carry electric power and data at speeds of up to 155Mbps. But the problem lies in voice services, which deteriorate as the distance increases.
CPqD's system will extend the quality of calls over long distance at a far cheaper cost than installing traditional amplifiers, which would cost hundreds of millions of reais, CPqD researcher Miriam Regina Xavier de Barros was quoted as saying.
The research unit's solution, developed in-house, is based on the amplifiers used in submarine cables, and could be up to 70% cheaper than traditional amplifiers, she said.
