A Brazilian solution developed by CPqD has led Telefônica to win the 2007 GITA Excellence in Telecommunications Award, which was presented during the 30 th Geospatial Information and Technology Association Annual Conference held in March 2007, in San Antonio, Texas.

Developed by CPqD Research and Development Center in Telecommunications, SAGRE (Outside Plant Management System) was distinguished by its quality and efficiency to integrate and standardize different operating procedures, dramatically reducing associated costs.

SAGRE is a georeferenced database system that allows locating information on telecommunication networks.  ?When the installation of a new telephone line is requested, the Customer Care & Service representative automatically views the installation choices such as, existing network facilities and infrastructure? , said Roberto Vivaldi Rodrigues, Director of CPqD?s Corporate Department of Operation Support Systems.

SAGRE handles the 14 million telephone lines managed by Telefônica in Brazil with high availability ? 24 hours a day, 7 days a week ? and it is operated simultaneously by one thousand users.

The system also manages service orders, accomplishes engineering projects and performs four billion searches in its database. According to Vivaldi, ?these features and capabilities provide Telefônica a powerful solution, which has been named SAGRE Constellation by their technical team.

The GITA Award is given annually since 1993 to companies in recognition of outstanding commitment and achievement in implementing geospatial systems that include multiple applications.  Some of the categories awarded are:  energy, gas, public projects, telecommunications and water supply.
