    Technologies for the smart grids of the future

The ever-more intense use of technologies in applications such as smart homes, electric vehicles and a massive number of electrical network-connected sensors of diverse kinds, the resulting trend is a steep increase in the demand for power. At the same time, the concern with sustainability and with the preservation of the environment leads to an increased search for solutions that ensure greater operational and power efficiency by using distributed and renewable energy sources.

CPQD has been active in the development of technologies, methods and algorithms applied to energy systems, with the purpose of increasing the capacity, reliability, availability and quality of the electric power supply.

CPQD has developed countless R,D&I projects, involving themes such as:

  • The development of batteries and charging and traction systems for electric vehicles.
  • The evaluation of the performance of electric mobility components (electric vehicles, charging stations, electric infrastructure, etc.).
  • The evaluation of the impact of electric vehicles, distributed generation and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) in the distribution system.
  • The development of advanced batteries for use in distributed generation.
  • The development of methods to improve the real time operation, planning and maintenance of distribution systems.

The developments are mapped in technological components that comprise energy storage systems, advanced metering, advanced automation, methods and algorithms, energy conversion, power system architecture and topology, and conformance and regulations. This set of know-how allows CPQD to develop research, development and innovation projects involving themes such as electric mobility, renewable sources, distributed generation and planning, maintenance and real time operation systems.

Energy Storage

Technologies applied to Energy Storage Systems (ESS) for peak-shaving, power quality, backup systems, electric vehicles, energy harvesting, among others. Examples of this technology include:

  • Electrochemical storage system (lead-acid, alkaline, lithium-ion, hydrogen, fuel cell, etc.)
  • Electric storage system (supercapacitors/ultracapacitors)
  • Thermal storage (cryogenic, vapor/melted salt)
  • Mechanical storage (compressed air, water pumping, flywheel, motor-generator)
  • Mechanical and thermal packaging

Advanced Energy Automation

Advanced automated technologies for power systems focusing on the evaluation of electrical network in different applications. Know-how includes:

  • Automated protocols for power systems (e.g. ICCP, DNP3, IEC 61850, etc.).
  • Protection systems (relay, alarms, etc.) that detect defects or other potentially dangerous or intolerable conditions of equipment, monitoring system conditions, etc.
  • Power Line Communication (PLC) for data transmission using the transmission and distribution power lines.

Advanced Energy Metering

Technologies for measuring, controlling and managing utility gauge and asset reading, allowing the interaction of data, information and commands. Examples of this know-how include:

  • Metering protocols (e.g.: ABNT, SIBMA, DLMS, etc.)
  • Multi-metering
  • Smart plug
  • Power quality
  • Power metering

Advanced Methods and Algorithms

Specialized methods and algorithms for different power system applications. Some examples:

  • Mathematical modeling and optimization techniques for operational problem solving and electrical network planning (self-healing, dispatch of field service personnel, Volt-VAr control, fault location, etc.)
  • Energy quality assessment
  • Interconnection and interoperability among electric vehicles and charging stations
  • Smart meter security
  • Battery useful life or degradation verification
  • Battery Management System (BMS)

Energy System Architecture/Topology

Technologies for the architectural conception of power generation, transmission and distribution systems and new equipment that will make up this system (distributed generation, electric vehicle).

Energy Conversion

Technologies for the conversion and management energy (AC/DC, DC/DC, DC/AC), using high frequency switching devices for low, medium and high power. Some examples:

  • AC and DC charging stations for electric vehicles (slow, semi-fast and fast charging)
  • Management and control systems
  • Inverters and converters
  • Battery Management Systems (BMS)

Conformity and Regulations

Techniques and methods for assessing the conformity of products in order to establish and meet quality standards adequate for functioning, operation and use. Examples: acoustic analysis, batteries, mechanical vibration analysis, inverters and charge controllers for photovoltaic systems. Conformity with ABNT, Anatel and Inmetro regulations and technical standards.

  • Regime de home office para todas as equipes, mantendo o trabalho presencial somente em atividades estritamente necessárias, como serviços de laboratórios, em esquema de revezamento;
  • Suspensão de viagens nacionais e internacionais;
  • Cancelamento de visitas e reuniões presenciais. As reuniões deverão ser realizadas somente por telefone, hangout, videoconferência ou outra ferramenta de comunicação;
  • Cancelamento de participação em eventos externos (treinamentos, feiras, convenções, etc);
  • Cancelamento de eventos internos.
